Professionally, i have been for more than a decade with the progressive magazine, a publication dedicated to nonviolence and social justice that is more than 100 years old.
I have been fortunate enough to have interviewed the dalai lama, mikhail gorbachev, jimmy carter and many other nobel laureates for the magazine.
What are your religious beliefs?
I am a hindu.
Where has the book been published?
So far, it has been published only in the united states.
I hope to get it published elsewhere, especially in the arab world and india.
How has the feedback of the book been like?
So far, it has been nearly completely positive.
But that may change as the book becomes better known.
There are a lot of you answer in the book, could you give us some examples?
A major misconception the world over is that islam was spread primarily by the sword.
Another huge myth is that muslims are incapable of practicing nonviolence.
By presenting several instances of mass civil disobedience in the muslim world, i have proven that to be untrue.
What do you think about islamophobia in the current world?
Hate and prejudice of any sort can have dire consequences.
As the norway attacks have shown, islamophobia taken to its extreme can be murderous.
And islamophobia can have broader implications beyond the acts of a twisted individual.
Parts of the media have played a big impact on the negative portrayal of islam, can we, muslims and nonmuslims, change it around?
It is difficult, but it can be done.
I have been very excited the past few months about the positive images that have come out of the arab world, especially egypt and tunisia.
But it is really important for us to engage one on one with people and try to correct their stereotypes.
It is no coincidence that research has shown again and again that the negative views of islam held by an average american sharply decrease when he or she knows a muslim personally.
